Dog Training - "Sit" The most basic thing to teach a dog is "Sit." Is is the foundation of all dog obedience training. Most dogs are eager to please themselves and will jump, get crazy, not listen and get out of control. All the other commands and control begin with "Sit." Obedience training starts with the thought that your dog should not get attention for free. First get him to "Sit" then praise him for sitting. "Sit" is beneficial as a calming experience for the dog especially if he is hyper about going somewhere. It gets your dog to think rather than react to some spur of the moment emotion. Use a short, firm command in your voice. Have him "Sit" when you take him for a walk. "Sit" when putting the chain on the collar. "Sit" when opening the door. "Sit" when closing and locking the door. "OK" or something to that effect will be the release word to end the sit. Later on in his training practice longer sits. Always praise your dog for the "Sit." Learning to sit will increase the dogs respect for you as the leader and give you greater control in further obedience training. Many believe there should be no free lunch in dog training. Have him "Sit" before giving him his meal. "Sit" before a treat. "Sit" will stop him from jumping on guests or chasing the cat. "Sit" is a valuable tool.
