Dog Potting Training Dog and puppies as well as most animals have a built in sensibility not to poop or urinate in their den. They have to be taught the boundaries of their den. You have to talk to your pet and show him where those boundaries lie. It will take a lot of patience and daily schedule you'll have to stick to. Generally speaking, if your dog has come out of a kennel and has gotten imprinted with messing their kennel area you'll have a harder teaching time. Puppies are the easiest to train. It takes about a week to house train a dog. The worst thing you can do to a do is to punish him for pooping or urinating in the house. The best thing to do is to clean up the mess with soap and water and spay it with water and a white vinegar solution (about 25%) to mask any odor. Put on the leash, or off leash if your pet is trusted to come back and you live in the country, and take them for a walk. Take him to the same spot and wait till your pet relieves them self. Don't let her play or pay any attention to her until she has gone to the potty. When she finally goes, give her a lot of praise: " Good Dog!, Gooood Dog!" If you're carting a treat, now is the time to give it. If she didn't go to the bathroom, bring her in the house and do some busywork while keeping an eye on your pooch. After 15-minutes, take her out again to the same spot and try again. You can have the dog sleep in the same room as you do so he does not roam the house. Her arrangement could be a kennel box with a door or whatever special bedding you have. As soon as the dog wakes up take him outside to urinate. When she goes, give her a lot of praise: " Good Dog!, Gooood Dog!" Teach your dog to signal you for letting you know that it has to go out. Before you go out the door, wait till your dog sits. Say: "Good Dog!" and then open the door to go out. In time your pooch will associate the door and sitting as the signal for letting you know she needs to go out. Your dog may let out a little bark or scratch at the door. If the dog scratches at the door wait till they stop scratching otherwise you will reinforce door scratching as the dominant signal.
