Dog Training - Fetch The Newpaper

If your yard is not fenced in, proceed with his off-leash training until you can trust him.

After your dog has learned to fetch and retrieve this variation can prove quite useful. Take an old newspaper, roll it up and tape so it won't unroll with tape. Prepare the dummy newspaper the same way it is usually left for you by the news service delivery person - plastic baged, rubber banded....

Toss it and say to your dog "Bring Me The Paper." Do this a few times while praising him each time he retrieves the paper. Repeat this a few times a day for a few days.

Now toss the dummy paper to where your newspaper is usually left in the driveway, outside your door or where ever that newspaper usually lands. Practice having the paper picked up by your dog in that usual spot. When he does obey the command say Good Boy! and give him a treat.

When he as that down and the usual time for newspaper delivery arrives, open the door and ask your dog " Bring The Paper."
