Dog Training - Fetch and Retrieve

Most dogs are eager to please themselves. They like chasing things like sticks and balls. So while they are chasing, get them to come to you. Ignore what they have in their mouth and praise him for coming to you. Then try saying Sit!, Stay!

If your dog tries to get you to chase him while he has the object in his mouth, pretend to pay no attention to him. When he eventually comes to you don't make him give his treasure to you every time.

With stick, practice with your dog taking the stick out of your hand and say Take It! That should not be hard since it's in the inclination of most dogs to take sticks out of you hand. Say Good Boy! when the action is initiated

At this point you'll want to teach him to Drop It! A collar may be necessary as an aid. Holding his head high with the leash when you say Drop It! may speed thing up. When he does obey the command say Good Boy! and give him a treat.

If you live by a lake or the ocean, when it is still warm, try throwing the stick into the water just a few feet out. Encourage him to swim out to retrieve it. Increase the distance gradually and you'll have an Olympic retriever on your hand in no time.
